Embraced by many guitarists of the folk and blue-grass genres, its also been a fixture in rock n' roll. Often associated with artists such as Hank Williams and James Taylor, the D-18 is still embraced by contemporary artists like Molly Tuttle. The body top on this example from 1973 is crafted from fine-grained sitka spruce, and the dreadnought body is adorned with multi-ply binding and a rosette. The back and sides are made of Honduran mahogany. This is a key feature of the Style-18 and an essential part of the D-18's subdued appearance. The combination of mahogany back\/sides and its non-scalloped X bracing pattern result in a beautiful, thick tone. The fingerboard is made of Indian rosewood, and the position markers are pearloid dots.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe mahogany neck features a soft V-shape with a medium profile.\u003cbr\u003eThe neck is steel reinforced, as Martins did not feature an adjustable truss rod until 1985. The down-belly bridge is made of rosewood and features a short saddle. Although this instrument is 53 years old, it is in excellent condition and shows signs of having been used for performances. The top, back, and neck have been professionally repaired and ready for another 50+ years of joy and entertainment. This instrument produces a bright full-bodied tone that is also well-suited for contemporary music.
