Bassist and businessman Randy Curlee owned a music store near Chicago, Illinois and wanted to market some basses in the mid-'70s. Luthier/designer Randy Dritz and woodworker/pattern maker "Sonny" Storbeck were working on similar aims and prototyping instruments. Meeting in 1975, they decided to work together. By 1977, Curlee figured if he was going to get copied, he would arrange it and get paid through licensing deals and import versions he could sell as an "International" line of SD Curlees. Arrangements were made with the Matsumoku factory in Japan for the models branded SD Curlee "Int'l" and through Hondo for "Curlee Design" and "Aspen" series. This bass consists of a Mahogany body and 3 piece Maple neck with a long tendon that runs under the bridge and bolts to the back of the bass with a large brass plate. Brass nut and bridge complete this 32" scale, 24 fret bass with the split "P" pickups offering lots of sonic versatility via it's series/parallel switch.
