As 70s hard rock transitioned into 80s metal, players looking for more aggressive looking instruments began to turn towards Jackson and B.C. Rich for their unique body designs and quality control. Introduced in 1984, the Gibson Explorer XPL sought to capture that same audience with the additional defined points to the explorer body and headstock. Alongside the Kahler Flyer bridge are an original dirty fingers bridge pickup and a period-correct PAF neck pickup. Keeping in line with the dark themes portrayed in metal music an Ebony finish over the mahogany body and maple neck was an obvious choice when designing the Explorer XPL. The ebony fingerboard features 22 frets and pearloid dots capable of handling the more boisterous lead players.
